»» Bridal Trends: Dresses and Beauty Tips

53

Increasingly women are preferring designer or high street dresses to the traditional wedding dresses; it seems to be the new trend for modern brides.

Liz Savage, editor of Brides magazine, says:

“There are a lot of women who don’t want to wear a traditional wedding dress. Designers such as Valentino, Elie Saab and Christian Lacroix including dresses that are perfect for modern brides in their ready-to-wear collections.”

After choosing the wedding dress, here you are a few bridal beauty tips:

  • Don’t have intensive beauty treatments the day before, as skin can react to, and is more sensitive in, the heat. Have a skin microdermabrasion facial about a month beforehand - then pedicures and manicures the day before.
  •

  • Well-groomed eyebrows are essential. Invest in a professional to shape them - done properly they can transform your face.
  •

»» Goodbye Low-Rise Jeans

52

With Spring approaching, a new style of jeans, called midrise, is replacing the low-rise cut which has dominated the scene in the last years.

The new cut, ends about two fingers below the navel and has a waistband that rests two thirds of the way between the hip and the smallest part of the waist.

After a period of 5/6 years, marked by the trend “the lower the better”, most of women, not comfortable wearing low-rise cut, welcome the new style.
The author of the story Jeans Rising, wonders:

” Why did the style endure so long? It’s a mystery.
Low-rise jeans aren’t very comfortable, and it’s tricky to find a pair that fits. Doctors warned women not to wear them too tight—a Canadian medical journal reported that patients actually sustained nerve damage from wearing overconstricting hip-huggers.
School administrators were not amused: low-rise jeans are banned from scores of high schools. “

Manufacturers and stylists know not everyone looks good in low-rises, so by introducing more-wearable styles they are hoping to reignite sales.

»» More Laser Treatments, Less Face-Lift

50

According to a survey conducted by American Society of Plastic Surgeons, increasingly people prefer minimally invasive facial procedures - such as laser treatments, to face-lifts.

Doctors performed 108,955 face-lifts last year, but they did a whopping 3.8 million Botox treatments and 1 million chemical peels.

Botox is both easier and cheaper than a face-lift, but is not a permanent fix, so it has to be repeated every three to four months, whereas a face-lift lasts a decade.

The top five cosmetic surgical procedures in 2005 were: liposuction, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, and tummy tucks.

»» Women’s Fashion: Fresh Ideas Wanted

49

A story from Newsweek titled All Dressed Up for the Youthquake, leads to reflections on how the women’s fashions have changed in the last 20 years.

According to the author of the story, Cathleen McGuigan, there would be a shortage of new ideas in the collections presented by fashion designers in the last years.

She says too many ideas and motives recently seen on the catwalks were stolen from the trends launched in the ’60s and ’70s.

“It’s hard to believe we’re in the 21st century when the fashion runways are jammed with ideas from the 1960s and ’70s,…..This year especially, it’s deja vu all over again.”

She continues:

“In fact, women’s fashions changed more radically in the years from World War I to the end of World War II than they have since the end of the pivotal baby-boom decades, from the Vietnam War to the 1980s.”

With a historical flashback on the ’60s and ’70s, Cathleen McGuigan describes how the music drove the street style and England was the cutting edge as in fashion as in music.

“Music brought together the ideas of mods and rockers, the revolution of Carnaby Street, the coolness of London.”

Now, most of designers would just be sampling and remixing ideas and styles from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.
She concludes:

“…what’s missing is the impulse that made these designs cool long ago: they were unexpected, impolite, even subversive.”
